Abstract

Abstract: Understanding the adaptive capabilities of complex adaptive systems (CAS)—ranging from biological organisms and ecosystems to artificial intelligence and socio-economic structures—is a core challenge in science and practice. However, existing assessments are often constrained by domain-specific perspectives and potential anthropocentric biases, failing to capture a universal logic of adaptability. This paper introduces and elaborates on the Universal Framework for Adaptive Fitness (PAFF), an attempt to transcend traditional paradigms benchmarked against human intelligence or consciousness. Through a cross-disciplinary construction, PAFF explores a common foundation for evaluating the adaptive potential of any CAS. Integrating core principles from complexity science, information theory, thermodynamics, and evolutionary theory, the framework assesses systems across four interconnected key dimensions: 1) Self-Maintenance & Organization (maintaining organization against entropy); 2) Resource/Information Acquisition & Processing (effective exchange with the environment); 3) Adaptability & Resilience (responding to perturbations and managing uncertainty); and 4) Replication/Expansion (propagating organizational patterns). This paper details the conceptual underpinnings, theoretical bases, and potential metrics for each dimension, highlighting their interdependencies and inherent trade-offs. PAFF offers a structured, dynamic, and multi-faceted perspective on adaptation, facilitating the understanding of diverse adaptive strategies, from bacterial survival to the unique "order-making construction" of human societies. While acknowledging the challenges of quantification and the framework's inherently constructivist and heuristic nature, PAFF is poised to serve as a valuable tool for fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue, deepening insights into system sustainability and the logic of existence, and stimulating philosophical reflection on adaptability itself. Future research should focus on developing the metric system and applying the framework cautiously across diverse systems.
