Abstract

This paper explores the concept of multiple literacies in the context of data science and visualization instruction. Sharing examples from the university classroom, it argues that simple data literacy is a limited concept for understanding what we expect from our students, and that data fluency more accurately captures what we, as data educators, hope our students will carry with them into their roles as engaged citizens, their professional careers, and their creative lives.
