Abstract

This exploratory study examines how integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into active‑learning strategies can enhance student engagement and support critical thinking and problem‑solving in higher education. Using an action research design, first‑year college students participated in an AI‑supported storytelling activity. Analysis of student comments, classroom photographs, and instructor reflections revealed two central themes: motivation tied to formal assessment and the instructor’s supportive role. Findings suggest that AI storytelling can foster collaboration and creativity, but its effectiveness depends on assessment alignment, student agency, and institutional support. The study underscores the importance of AI literacy and intentional instructional design when incorporating AI into undergraduate learning environments.
