The Influence of ChatGPT on English Grammar Among Saudi ESL Learners

The evolution of Artificial Intelligence (here onwards AI) learning has been remarkable. In education, it has inspired researchers and educators to explore potential benefits for enhancing learning outcomes. Notably, Generative AI has demonstrated considerable promise as a means of language enhancement. This study investigates if ChatGPT can elevate the grammar skills of Saudi English as a second Language (here onwards ESL) students. This research would be significant as in the Saudi context, learning English grammar through uninteresting methods have failed to promote learning. Therefore, AI’s integration can provide with effective outcomes for learners and teachers. This research involved 100 BS students as a sample from public sector universities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Before intervention, all the participants took an initial assessment and on the basis of their performance in the test, the participants were divided into two groups of 50 students each. One group received instruction through traditional classroom methods, while the other utilized ChatGPT alongside their teacher. The intervention lasted two weeks and then a final-test was conducted and the scores were compared. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the scores of students who engaged with ChatGPT. Furthermore, the students provided predominantly positive feedback regarding their learning experience with ChatGPT. The results indicated the effectiveness of ChatGPT as an influential AI learning tool for enhancing grammatical efficiency in ESL contexts.
