Background: Meditation has recently gained attention as a promising tool for enhancing psychedelic preparedness. This exploratory study builds on quantitative work by investigating how experienced meditators who use psychedelics understand meditation’s role in preparation and its influence on different aspects of the psychedelic experience. Methods: We conducted a reflexive thematic analysis of open-ended responses from participants (N = 82) with experience in both meditation and psychedelic use. Using an inductive, constructionist approach that prioritised meaningfulness over frequency, we sought to identify nuanced, experientially grounded perspectives that may be overlooked by quantitative methods and that can inform future hypothesis generation. Results: Participants understood meditation as contributing to psychedelic preparation in three primary ways: (1) optimising pre-psychedelic mindset by enhancing openness and adaptability; (2) facilitating the navigation of challenges through familiarity-building, acceptance-based, and self-regulatory strategies; and (3) supporting psychological development by fostering insight and providing a framework for integration and sustained growth. Conclusions: Findings suggest that meditation and psychedelics may act synergistically along a continuum of psychological development, and that embedding psychedelic experiences within a broader developmental trajectory (such as that offered by meditation) may enhance therapeutic potential. Future work should develop frameworks that integrate models of meditation- and psychedelic-related psychological transformation, particularly regarding advanced meditative development and its endpoints. Such frameworks could inform the creation of safe, synergistic protocols that optimise preparation and improve outcomes at the intersection of third-wave contemplative science and psychedelic research.
