This study examined the adequacy of the MUSIC model of musical preferences within the Brazilian context and developed an emic model that incorporates national genres. A sample of 473 adults completed measures of music preferences, coping through music listening, positive and negative affect, and quality of life. Analyses included confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis, multiple regressions, and mediation and moderation models. The adapted MUSIC model showed acceptable congruence, though the Unpretentious and Intense factors exhibited low internal consistency. The emic model identified five reliable factors - Reflexo, Intenso, Tradição, Movimento, and Orgânico (RITMO) - reflecting Brazilian cultural and musical specificities. Reflexo was the strongest predictor of using music for emotional and problem-focused coping, while Movimento predicted negative affects, and Sophisticated and Mellow explained positive ones. Tradição and Reflexo predicted specific domains of quality of life. Mediation and moderation analyses indicated that music use for emotional and problem-focused coping increased positive affect, with these effects mediated and moderated by preferences for Reflexo and Orgânico. The RITMO model more accurately captures Brazilian musical preferences, highlighting rhythm as central. Preferences for Reflexo and Orgânico especially enhance the positive impact of music use on emotional well-being and quality of life.
