Abstract

We translated and tested psychometric properties of the Body Perception Questionnaire–Short Form (BPQ-SF) in Serbian. In an online study (N =795; Serbian university students; 63% women; M_age = 19.03, SD = 0.78), the proposed factor structure was confirmed, with one factor for Body Awareness and two for Autonomic Symptoms (supradiaphragmatic and subdiaphragmatic) (χ2(984) = 3222.96, RMSEA = .054, CFI = .953, TLI = .951). We observed meaningful correlations between BPQ-SF scores and measures of interoceptive awareness (.07 ≤ r ≤ .35), symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress (.18 ≤ r ≤ .52), and the presence of chronic diseases (.08 ≤ r ≤ .21). The Body Awareness Very Short Form (BA-VSF), whose 12 items are embedded within the BPQ-SF, showed comparable results. These findings support the relevance of the BPQ-SF for use in counseling and developmental settings to better understand and address links between bodily sensations, emotional distress, and physical health.
