Abstract

We have accomplished the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen and water without any catalyst or reductant under ambient conditions, using a high surface area porous activated carbon cloth as the cathode and iridium oxide as the anode. Our findings experimentally verified the possibility in principle of electrochemical ammonia synthesis from water and nitrogen without a catalyst, based on Pourbaix’s atlas of electrochemical equilibria.
