Abstract

Hutong is an alley with Chinese courtyard built on its both sides. From the Beijing citizens, Hutong is a traditional residential area fulling with social interaction. Neighborhood cohesion refers to the strength of social bonds and a sense of solidarity within a community which was risen by neighborhood social interaction. It is a standard for measuring the relationships among neighborhood numbers. However, there is a lack of instrument for measuring Hutong neighborhood cohesion. Hence, this research aims to construct a neighborhood cohesion instrument, which is suitable for measuring residents’ relations in Hutong. Initially, conceptual instrument with indicators of attraction-to-neighborhood, neighboring, and sense of community was employed for quantitative research. After exploratory factor analysis and confirmative factor analysis, the result code unexpected indicators as social support, shared identity and collective responsibility. The conclusion advised the future research to use emerging indicators to measure neighborhood cohesion in Hutong. It also recommends eliciting the indicators using qualitative research.
