Background Low sexual desire in women is a common condition that frequently causes distress. The causes are multiple and involve both psychological and physical factors. In recent decades, there has been a growing focus on female sexual dysfunctions, yet few pharmacological treatments are available. This study aims to explore the associations between contributing demographic information and low sexual desire and the prevalence and interest of cis-women in pharmacological therapy for low sexual desire via a social media survey. Method We performed a multinational, cross-sectional survey with components from a previously validated questionnaire and the Female Sexual Function Index. The survey was disseminated via social media. The data were examined using a multivariable logistic regression model. Results Out of the 6,430 women who accessed the survey link, 5768 were included in the final analysis. The average age was 34.1 ± 8.3 years. A total of 88.5% indicated a decrease or a lack of sexual desire in the previous month. As women age, their desire tends to diminish, and their level of distress decreases as well. Sexual desire tends to diminish with changes in relationship status and during menopause, whereas feelings of distress increase among women in stable relationships. Individuals in stable relationships experienced greater sexual satisfaction. The use of oral contraceptives was linked to reduced sexual desire. Most women experiencing low desire were interested in medication therapy, although there are notable geographical differences in this interest. Conclusion In female patients experiencing reduced sexual desire, healthcare professionals should consider the impact of hormones and the dynamics of relationships, as these factors could affect their level of sexual desire. For certain women experiencing low sexual desire, medication can be a treatment option. Social media could serve as a practical platform for conducting sexual medicine surveys.
