Abstract

This work investigates the performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme based on the discrete Hartley transform (DHT) for visible light communication (VLC) systems. Unlike conventional optical OFDM approaches such as DCO-OFDM and ACO-OFDM, which require Hermitian symmetry and suffer from reduced spectral efficiency and increased complexity, the proposed DHT-OFDM eliminates this requirement. As a result, it enables all subcarriers to carry information and significantly lowers computational complexity. Simulation results show that DHT-OFDM achieves comparable bit error rate performance, superior sidelobe suppression, and higher bandwidth efficiency compared to traditional schemes. These advantages make DHT-OFDM a promising candidate for energy-efficient, high-speed VLC applications.
