Analysis of periodontal health status among adults aged 35-44 years in Shanghai, China:A cross-sectional study

Objective: To assess and explore the current periodontal status and periodontal health levels among adults aged 35 to 44 years in Shanghai, and analyse their influential factors which may have an impact on periodontal health status. Method: Data were collected in 6 districts of Shanghai, China(four urban and two rural areas were included) from March 2021 to October 2021, multi-stage, stratified and random sampling were used in this survey. All the subjects are 35-44 years old. Overall, a total of 878 subjects were enrolled in the study, each of whom was required to answer and fill out a questionnaire and undergo a professional oral health examination. Results: 878 subjects were included in this study, the prevalence of gingival bleeding and calculus was 51.8% and 88.8%, respectively, and the prevalence of gingival health was 40.7%,in the 35- to 44-year-old population. The prevalence of shallow periodontal pockets (4 mm ≤ PD < 6 mm) and deep periodontal pockets (PD ≥ 6 mm) was 47.6% and 2.2%, respectively, in the 35- to 44-year-old population. In addition, the prevalence of clinical attachment loss (CAL ≥ 3mm) was 18.9%. Conclusion: Citizens in Shanghai have a high prevalence of periodontal disease, with a relatively large percentag e of bleeding on probing、calculus and shallow periodontal pockets among adults aged 35 to 44 years. Gender, living area, education level, income, age, t eeth cleaning experience , smoking, duration of smoking, brushing frequency, and floss using may be influential factors in periodontal status.
