Clinical Effectiveness and Side Effect Profile of Contraceptive Implant (Implanon) Among Women at Sulaimaniyah City, Iraq

Abstract

Background Contraception is an effective way to prevent unintended pregnancies that have a significant impact on the women health and budget of countries. Objectives To assess the clinical effectiveness and side-effect profile of progesterone implant as a contraceptive method among the participants. Patients and methods This prospective, cross-sectional, observational study recruited 101 patients who used Implanon, Sulaimaniyah, Iraq, from January 2022 to January 2025. Then, participants’ sociodemographic and medical data were collected using a standard validated questionnaire. Then, the correlations between some variables were determined to find the effectiveness and side effects of the Implanon. Results A significant proportion of women using Implanon were aged ≥ 35 years old (45.5%) and obese (36.6%). The common side effects of Implanon were weight gain, headache, and loss of libido. Most patients were removed Implanon or intended to remove it (54.5%) before 3 years, mainly due to menstrual irregularities (43.6%). No women got pregnant during the Implanon use, while six got pregnant after 6 months of Implanon removal. Women aged ≥ 35 years with ≥ 3 children were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) experienced more side effects. Conclusions Implanon considered totally efficient and safe contraceptive method to be used in women of reproductive age, despite some side effects.
