Background: Early infancy is crucial for neurodevelopment, where responsible parenting can play a vital role. But, parental knowledge on neurodevelopment has been documented to be low among Indian mothers. Effective maternal education requires understanding viewpoints, needs, and methods. This study aims to investigate the current knowledge and awareness of parents regarding the neurodevelopment delays. Methods: A qualitative semi-structured interview was conducted with mothers of children with developmental disorders and paediatrics healthcare professionals (HCPs). Interview focused on parental concerns, awareness of developmental monitoring, effective educational methods, and the pros and cons of existing monitoring and education approaches. Results: Based on grounded theory analysis, responses of 18 mothers and 20 HCPs were coded and themes such as early screening and developmental monitoring, monitoring and follow up, parental education and embracing trans-disciplinary approach were identified. With adequate education on child development and early intervention parents eventually overcame the initial hesitation to approach the HCPs. With periodic follow up phone calls and reminders pediatric therapists were able to ensure follow up of the rehabilitation. The inadequacy of HCP in pediatric field has posed a significant challenge in conducting comprehensive assessments. This poses an urgent need to equip parents with adequate knowledge via various educational methods. Conclusion: The research emphasizes the importance of educating mothers on neuro-developmental monitoring, highlighting strategies for implementing maternal education, designing a developmental checklist, enhancing trans-disciplinary collaboration, and establishing early intervention centers. It suggests implementing a collaborative maternal education program and developmental surveillance tool, with policies for effective delivery.
