Abstract

Purpose This study aims to determine the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders and their association with facial biotypes in Chilean children aged 7 to 14 years, providing valuable data for early intervention. Methods A cross-sectional study assessed the association between temporomandibular disorders and facial biotypes in 83 children and adolescents aged 7 to 14. Participants were evaluated using Axis I of the DC/TMD adapted for non-adult populations to identify the presence of temporomandibular disorders. Additionally, cephalometric analysis using Ricketts’ VERT index was performed to determine each participant's facial biotype. Results A prevalence of 27.71% for temporomandibular disorders was identified in the study population. A significant association was observed between the dolichofacial biotype and articular disorders, specifically disc displacement with reduction and arthralgia. Conclusion The prevalence of temporomandibular disorders in Chilean individuals aged 7 to 14 years was 27.71%. Furthermore, an association was found between the dolichofacial biotype and the presence of articular disorders, namely disc displacement with reduction and arthralgia.
