Abstract

This study investigates the multifaceted influence of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on the student writing process and compositional fluency. As AI-powered writing assistants, grammar checkers, and content generators become increasingly prevalent in educational settings, understanding their impact on student learning and skill development is crucial. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of student writing samples (pre- and post-intervention with AI tool use) with qualitative data derived from surveys, interviews, and focus groups. The study examines how AI tools affect various stages of the writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. Furthermore, it assesses the impact of AI integration on key aspects of compositional fluency, such as lexical complexity, syntactic variety, coherence, cohesion, and overall writing quality. Preliminary findings suggest that while AI tools can enhance efficiency and provide immediate feedback, their uncritical or excessive use may lead to over-reliance, inhibit the development of critical thinking and independent writing skills, and potentially homogenize writing styles. Conversely, when used strategically as supplementary resources for learning and refinement, AI tools demonstrate potential for improving writing mechanics and expanding students' linguistic repertoires. This research aims to provide educators with evidence-based insights into optimizing the pedagogical integration of AI tools to foster, rather than hinder, the development of robust student writing abilities and genuine compositional fluency.
