Abstract

The Vilsmeier-Haack reaction is a convenient method for the formylation of electron-rich aromatic compounds. However, this interaction sometimes gives specific side products. We report the isolation and structural characterization of a novel compond (Z)-1-(3,5-dichloro-2-pyrrolidin)-N,N-dimethylmethanamine obtained as a side product during the formylation of 2-chloropyrrole. The product was characterized using NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
