This study aimed to understand the aspects associated with suicide in aging, based on research that used psychosocial autopsies as an investigative strategy. This is an integrative review conducted in the BVS, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, covering articles in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, according to the recommendations of the PRISMA flowchart. Eight articles were selected, revealing four main thematic axes: “Social isolation and loneliness”; “Depression and other mental disorders”; “Loss of social roles and identity”; and “Chronic diseases and chronic pain.” Feelings of hopelessness, uselessness, and helplessness were also highlighted, in addition to the fragility of support networks, the absence of emotional support, and life events that compromise autonomy. The data from the autopsies provided a detailed understanding of the psychosocial impact and individual experiences of older adults as factors associated with suicide in this age group, highlighting the need to implement public policies and preventive interventions with a multidimensional and intersectoral approach that consider the complexity of the phenomenon and the determinants related to the health conditions of older adults, including expanding and improving access to services, ensuring comprehensive care that minimizes conditions of vulnerability.
