Abstract

Herbal treatments and supplements for various disorders, both mental and physical, have been used for several centuries. They are often perceived as benign, devoid of side effects and a safer option compared to allopathic medication. However, these treatments have active ingredients which can have potential effects and side effects like any other psychoactive substance or medication. Due to the lack of controlled studies, evidence about the incidence of side effects related to herbal products is limited. This case report describes a single experience of long-term use of ashwagandha followed by significant symptoms of anxiety and depression on withdrawal and the emergence of a psychotic episode six months later. The existing knowledge about ashwagandha and the observations, in this case, are discussed.
