Background
Poor sleep quality (PSQ) is prevalent among patients on dialysis. However, the etiology and coping strategies for PSQ may vary based on gender. The influence of gender differences remains unexplored. This study investigates the influence of gender on PSQ and associated risk factors in patients on dialysis.
Methods
This study included 260 patients who underwent dialysis at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, China between May 2023 and October 2023. Patient health, sleep patterns, and emotional status were assessed using structured questionnaires. Blood composition is determined via the most recent medical examination record. Both univariate and multivariate analyses were employed to identify factors influencing sleep quality across genders. Additionally, the Student’s t-test was used to identify factors that cause differences in sleep quality between genders.
Results
In general, compared with male patients, female patients presented inferior sleep quality. Comprehensive factor analysis revealed that male PSQ was predominantly associated with pruritus, anxiety, and decreased ferritin levels. Conversely, female PSQ was associated with restless legs syndrome, elevated systolic blood pressure, and depression.
Conclusions
Gender-specific risk factors are evident for PSQ among patients on dialysis, emphasizing the need for personalized treatment and tailored nutritional interventions. This study has significant implications for nephrology nursing.
