In the present study pigment producing bacteria were isolated from soil samples collected from Kodaikanal hills. A total of 17 pigment producing bacteria were isolated from various places in Kodaikanal Hills, Tamil Nadu. Pigments were produced by solid state fermentation method. The pigments from bacterial cells were extracted by solvents. All the extracted pigments were screened for antimicrobial activity. Among 17 isolates four isolates showed antimicrobial activity against test organisms. Out of 4 isolated the bacteria FF5 showed maximum zone of inhibition against test organisms, hence the FF5 isolate selected as potent isolate. The crude pigment obtained from FF5 isolate extracted by ethanol and active compound was found by analytical TLC and bioautography. The active compound was collected by preparative TLC. UV and FTIR and chemical screening reveal the presence of compounds belong to carotenoid. The optimum conditions for the maximum production of FF5 isolate comprises of of pigment production was influenced by carbon source as mannitol, nitrogen source as yeast extract at pH 7, incubation time as 72hours at temperature 30°C . The potent isolate was found to be genus Micrococcus.
