Abstract

Introduction: Beauty salons, while offering quality aesthetic services, represent a major health risk due to their potential role in the spread of fungal infections. Objective: The objective of this study was to detect the presence of fungi in beauty salons and spas, in order to make their owners and staff aware of the hygiene and sterilization practices needed to limit health risks. Methodology: This study was carried out in 10 beauty salons in the Rabat-Salé-Témara region. A total of 81 samples were collected over a three-month period from various surfaces and equipment in these establishments. The samples were inoculated on Sabouraud medium. Identification of yeasts, dermatophytes and molds was carried out by macroscopic and microscopic analysis of cultures, supplemented by auxanogram for yeasts. Results:  The results show a total positivity rate of 55%. Various fungi were isolated at the following rates: 53% molds, with Cladosporium sp and Aspergillus sp predominating, 37% yeasts, predominated by Candida albicans, and 10% dermatophytes, represented by Trichophyton rubrum. Conclusion: Beauty salons and Spas, while offering quality aesthetic services, represent a major health risk due to their role in the spread of fungal infections. Our study assessed this risk, detecting the presence of various fungi within these institutes. These findings suggest that the cleaning protocols employed in these establishments are not sufficiently effective, and that it is important to make their owners and staff aware of the importance of proper disinfection and sterilization, and of good hygiene practices.
