The study presents the whole genome sequence of the carotenoid-producing Paracoccus sp. NFXS7, isolated from a marine saltern in Setúbal, Portugal. The carotenoid-producing strain NFXS7 contains homologs of the crt genes involved in astaxanthin biosynthesis, making it a promising candidate for biotechnological applications.

Here, the authors announce the whole genome sequence of the carotenoid producer, Paracoccus sp. NFXS7. The background, sequencing methodology and analysis pipeline are described in sufficient detail. The utility of this genome as a biotechnological resource is also well described, and a relveant bioproject has been created on NCBI which contains the raw data (sequencing reads) and genome assembly. The impact of this paper would be improved by the inclusion of a schematic diagram of the carotinoid BGC identified by antiSMASH, however I do not regard this necessary for publication.

The manuscript "Whole genome sequence of Paracoccus sp. NFXS7, a carotenoid-producing bacterium isolated from a marine saltern" presents the methodology and genome description of a carotenoid-producing Paracoccus species found in a marine saltern in Portugal. The author highlights the species (henceforth referred to as NFXS7) contains homologs of crt genes, that are characterised to be involved in astaxanthin biosythensis, a carotenoid typically used as a dietary supplement. The authors provide valuable insights into the genetic makeup, the presence of biosynthetic gene clusters and highlight the value of utilizing this assembly in further Paracoccus research. Comments: -The methodology section is well detailed, including the sequencing platform and genomic DNA extraction. -The authors highlight that …

The manuscript "Whole genome sequence of Paracoccus sp. -The authors highlight that AntiSMASH analysis revealed the presence of gene cluster involved in the synthesis of a few secondary metabolites that are mentioned in the text. This could be represented better in the form of a table highlighting secondary metabolite type, the region in the genome, and the most similar analogs of these metabolites. -The authors make a comparison between the high similarity of the NFXS7 carotenoid biosynthetic gene cluster and the biosynthetic gene cluster found in another Paracoccus species (N81106), however this is the only comparison made throughout the manuscript. Are further similarities between the biosynthetic gene clusters found in NFXS7 and N81106? - Additionally, to the previous comment, how does this genome sequence compare to other Paracoccus genome sequences? How has evolution impacted the genome of NFXS7 to the wider Paracoccus genus? A phylogenetic tree comparing NFXS7 to other Paracoccus species could be helpful in understanding the evolutionary history of NFXS7. This would be interesting to see, but not required for this manuscript.
