Abstract

The ethanolic (80 %), methanolic (80 %) and aqueous decoction (100 % distilled water) of whole plant of Oxalis corniculata Linn (Indian Sorrel) was evaluated for its anti‐microbial and antioxidant properties by in vitro methods. Methanolic (80 %) and ethanolic (80 %) decoctions showed significant antibacterial property against Staphylococcus aureus , Bacillus subtilis , Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhi bacterial strains. In comparison to Chloramphenicol (C30) against bacteria, 80 % ethanolic decoctions showed significant effect, among the decoctions. Nowadays though the standard soap is in huge demand but it’s also facing major backlash due to the presence of synthetic compounds in it, which over long use may cause harmful effects on the skin health. Therefore, the organic soaps which are made up of natural ingredients, herbs or any sort Ayurvedic compound have fewer side effects on the human skin and are much safer than standard daily soap. The formulated therapeutic soap exhibits a significant amount of reducing potential (high FRAP and TAC values) and antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS assay).

  2. Comments to Author

Upon reviewing the manuscript numbered as ACMI-D-23-00132R1, entitled ‘’Isolation of Bioactive Compounds from Low-cost Agricultural Resources and its Utilization in Daily Life.’’ the authors sought to evaluate the scavenging activity, antioxidant properties, and antimicrobial efficiency of the ethanolic, methanolic and aqueous decoction of whole plant of Oxalis corniculate Linn (Indian Sorrel) by in vitro methods as well as to formulate a therapeutic soap formulation with this plant extract. The authors conducted a meticulous study wherein they have planned and performed with different chemical, biochemical, and microbiological aspects, but there are some issues which should be clarified, and the reports have been re-considered to avoid misguiding the audiences. I may list my concerns as follow: 1- Why the authors choose chloramphenicol as control and which amount of it was used in the study? 2- Why did the authors use only agar-well diffusion method for examining this kind of herbal extract? 3- In the material & method part, authors used ethanol and methanol to prepare the extract of this plant but to be more reliable, the concentrations of these solvents must be given in such kind of study, because it is very critical determining the efficacy of these materials. So, the antimicrobial effect of this soap formulation is lack of accurate evidence. 4- The authors should give more knowledge about this plant extract and the formulated soap in the manuscript from therapeutic effect of this new formulation and the other points such as; biocompatibility, antiallergic effect etc. While the findings presented in this manuscript underscore the potential of this soap formulation These revisions would contribute to the clarity and accuracy of the manuscript, ensuring a more robust interpretation of the research findings. Based on this, I regret to inform you this manuscript is not suitable for publication in this manner. It may be re-evaluate if the authors can make suggested revisions and clarification. I regret to inform you that my final decision is Major revision.

  3. Comments to Author

Dear Editor and Authors, I reviewed manuscript presented by Debnath A. & Das A on "Isolation of Bioactive Compounds from Low-cost Agricultural Resources and its Utilization in Daily Life" In this study authors evaluated extractions (ethanolic, methanolic and aqueous) of Oxalis corniculate Linn and demonstrated that ethanolic decoction contains antimicrobial activity against selected Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains and compared the findings of formulated soap with the standards soap in market. Furthermore, total phenolic & flavonoid content, antioxidant potential and radical scavenging potential of different solvent fractions were determined. The findings of this study are of interest in context to natural based alternative of synthetic disinfectants/soaps. However, there are some deficiencies in some areas that should be addressed by the author to improve the overall quality of the submitted manuscript. Specific Comments: 1. A flow chart of experimental design would help its readerships. 2. Determination of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) will be more appropriate to demonstrate antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract after screening by Zone of Inhibition. 3. Authors have not assessed whether its safe to use. Cytotoxicity/inflammatory evaluations would be helpful in this regard. 4. Microbial mutagenicity assay (Ames Test) should be performed to evaluate mutagenicity of extracted fraction/s. Other minor comments: 1. Units should be displayed uniformly e.g. ml should be replaced by mL (Line 102, 135). 2. Also please make space between numbers and units. e.g 1 mL (Line 102) and 1 hour (Line 97).
