The rural community has an important role in improving the maternal health and child health situation in Bangladesh.
A research study was conducted in 2020 to explore the impact of Community people on maternal and neonatal health seeking behavior at Kalaroa upazila of Sathkhira district in Bangladesh. A comprehensive study involving two focus group discussions (FGDs) and sixteen in-depth interviews (IDIs) was conducted with Community Group (CG) and Community Support Group (CSG) members to delve into their experiences, duties, and challenges as members of their respective communities.
The participants highlighted their responsibilities, organizing meetings, providing health advice, and community support. They also discussed encountering obstacles, such as community skepticism towards family planning and financial inquiries, particularly from affluent individuals. Overcoming these barriers involved proactive communication, collaboration with higher authorities, and continuous community engagement. In terms of enhancing maternal and child health, community emphasized the need for improved healthcare infrastructure, including access to qualified medical professionals, essential drugs, transportation facilities, and better-equipped delivery rooms at community clinics. Some also advocated for separate funding mechanisms and enhanced training for staff.
Overall, their insights underscored the crucial role of community in promoting health addressing challenges to achieve better outcomes for mothers and children.
