Abstract

This article, co-authored by seven international educators, explores the role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI or just AI for short) in enhancing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Approaches to Teaching and Learning (ATL) introduced in 2015 to help develop students’ cognitive and metacognitive skills and to provide DP teachers with sound pedagogical principles. Drawing from their experiences in schools in America, Europe and Asia, the authors examine how AI can support and enhance the ATL, focusing on thinking skills, research skills, social skills, communication skills as well as assessment practices (both formative and summative). The authors advocate for AI as a supportive tool, not as a substitute for independent inquiry. This article contributes to ongoing discussions on AI’s role in IB education, encouraging further exploration and collaboration, including the need for data (both quantitative and qualitative) to evaluate the success of AI interventions.
