Abstract“Sukavichinomics” is a socio-economic and public policy philosophy developed by H.E. Sukavich Rangsitpol during his tenure as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education of Thailand from 1994 to 1997 (B.E. 2535–2540). At its core, this philosophy emphasizes development that does not dismantle or damage existing social structures. It promotes the preservation of local identities while embracing globalization, innovation, and intellectual advancement. This article presents a case study of the founding of Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) in Chiang Rai Province as a key example of the application of Sukavichinomics. The university was established through a deliberate process of “constructing without destroying,” meaning it was founded as a brand-new institution rather than by renaming or merging the existing Chiang Rai Rajabhat Institute. The latter continued to serve its role in community development, while MFU was designed to fulfill an international and forward-looking academic mission. This dual-track approach reflects a visionary strategy for regional development that seeks to balance globalization and localism, modern innovation and traditional wisdom, and ethical, sustainable growth. The study demonstrates that Sukavichinomics is not merely a theoretical or abstract concept but a practical and adaptable policy framework. When implemented effectively, it can guide national development in a way that respects and retains the cultural and institutional roots of local communities.
