Abstract

This study aims to describe (1) the types of illocutionary speech acts used by the characters in Cara Berbahagia Tanpa Kepala’s novel by Henny Triskaidekaman; (2) the function of illocutionary speech acts in Cara Berbahagia Tanpa Kepala’s novel by Henny Triskaidekaman.; and (3) relevance to literary learning. The theory used is illocutionary speech act theory according to Searle. This type of research is qualitative with descriptive methods. The data source of this research is the speech in Cara Berbahagia Tanpa Kepala’s novel by Henny Triskaidekaman. The technique of collecting data is done by using library, listening and note taking techniques. Literature technique is done by reading the entire Cara Berbahagia Tanpa Kepala’s novel by Henny Triskaidekaman. The results showed that the form of speech acts of illocution used by the characters in Cara Berbahagia Tanpa Kepala’s novel by Henny Triskaidekaman, there are five types of utterances, namely representative speech acts, directive speech acts, expressive speech acts, commissive speech acts, and declaration speech acts. The directive speech act function is the most dominant in Cara Berbahagia Tanpa Kepala’s novel by Henny Triskaidekaman. Cara Berbahagia Tanpa Kepala’s novel by Henny Triskaidekaman has relevance to literary learning that can be used as an alternative in literary learning in high school.
