Large language models (LLMs) made headlines in November 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT and have since then made their way into society and thus also higher education. LLM literacy is considered an important new skill and teachers are experimenting with integrating LLMs in their courses. Here we reflect on the tensions that arise between the environmental impact and social justice aspects of LLMs and the urgent, time-dependent and inter- and transdisciplinary nature of academic sustainability education, and offer concrete starting points for addressing these tensions within academic sustainability education programs.
