While the impact of emotions on learning is well-established in educational research, higher education instructors often lack practical, actionable strategies for addressing emotional barriers in real-time classroom situations. This article addresses this gap by introducing and operationalizing the concept of emotional micro-interventions—brief, deliberate verbal or gestural acts that validate, reframe, and redirect student emotions toward productive learning. Grounded in cognitive appraisal theory and situated learning, this practice-oriented framework moves beyond theoretical recognition of affective dimensions to provide a concrete "phrasebook" for the emotional terrain of skill-based learning. Using the vivid metaphor of the instructor as an expedition guide—simultaneously content expert, group dynamist, and logistical anticipator—the article presents a structured approach to identifying emotional bottlenecks, crafting targeted interventions, and cultivating a classroom climate where struggle is normalized as part of professional identity formation. Illustrated with examples from technical disciplines and transferable to any high-stakes learning environment, the guide emphasizes the integration of emotional scaffolding as a core component of pedagogical content knowledge. A protocol for implementation and co-creation with AI tools is provided, offering a scalable, adaptable model for enhancing student resilience, self-efficacy, and engagement. (Appendix contains an extensive set of emotional micro interventions).
