The 7 Dimensions of Augmented Thinking Grid: A Self-Assessment Tool for Developing Dialogic Agility in Human-AI Interaction

This conceptual paper introduces a novel self-assessment model designed to train professionals in strategic and reflective interaction with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) systems. In the face of the widespread adoption of GenAI in professional environments, we identify a critical deficit: users tend to approach them either as enhanced search engines ("execution" mode) or as omniscient oracles ("deference" mode), without developing a "dialogue conductor" posture. To address this gap, we propose the "7 Dimensions of Augmented Thinking" (7-DAT) grid, a heuristic framework enabling individuals to evaluate and develop their own cognitive processes during exchanges with GenAI. Grounded in theories of critical thinking (Facione, 2015; Paul & Elder, 2007), experiential learning (Kolb, 1984), and metacognition (Flavell, 1979), this grid moves beyond mere instrumental efficacy to encompass the strategic, identity-based, relational, and ethical dimensions of interaction. We detail each dimension, illustrate its application with concrete prompt examples, and discuss its potential as a core pedagogical tool for developing cognitive agility and professional agency in the age of AI.
