This study examines the Hands Up Project (HUP), a virtual initiative aimed at enriching English language learning for adolescent-aged Palestinian students in Gaza through intercultural online link-ups with international volunteers. The research evaluates the HUP’s impact on three key areas: ●Test scores in English exams●Enjoyment of English classes●Confidence in communicating in EnglishResults from a cluster-randomised trial indicate that HUP’s interactive sessions led to statistically significant improvements in student enjoyment and confidence relative to students in the control classes. The increase in student enjoyment was particularly marked. Increases in test scores were not statistically significant. The results from an interview with one of the teachers involved aligned with these findings. The teacher also reported renewed motivation and professional development. These findings demonstrate the transformative potential of virtual link-ups for students in Gaza, as well as potentially for students in other isolated, conflict-affected regions.
