Abstract

AI (Artificial Intelligence) and GAI (Generative AI) are two technologies which offer significant opportunities and challenges for institutions looking to enhance their provision of formative feedback. This paper offers a reflective evaluation of a change from Studiosity’s human WF (Writing Feedback) service to the recently released WF+ (Writing Feedback plus) an AI-driven service. Using Activity Theory as a theoretical lens the paper explores the challenges of trialling AI-led feedback as part of upscaling the use of learning technology for learning, teaching and assessment. Drawing on reflections from the author, who led the change initiative, it highlights the complexities of implementing a standardised AI-feedback tool at a whole institutional level and explores lessons learned concerning: timing, stakeholder communication, the need to differentiate support and reiterates the importance of keeping humans in the loop. The paper concludes with considerations that other HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) to consider when exploring the possibilities of implementing AI-enabled feedback and informing pedagogical and policy development.
