Abstract

This research was carried out with the aim of investigating the intervention techniques teachers can use to resolve conflicts in public secondary schools in Owerri. The purpose of this study was to find out the intervention techniques teachers can use to resolve conflicts in secondary schools. The research design was a descriptive survey.The population of this study was made up of one hundred and ninety-nine (199) principals and One thousand eight hundred (1,800) teachers. A sample of thirty (30) principals and One hundred and seventy (170) teachers were selected using aproportionate stratified random sampling technique. Four research questions and two null hypotheses were used to guide the study. The reliability of the instrument was determined using the Alpha test of reliability. Percentage responses were used toanswer the research questions by computing responses of the principals in Schools in frim 11 towns in Owerri, while chi-squared test statistics were used to test the two null hypotheses. The findings of this study were that the effective intervention techniques,teachers can use to resolve conflict include administrative and ethical intervention techniques, ethical intervention techniques and psychological and social interventiontechniques. Based on the findings, it is recommended that secondary school principals should provide a communicative and participative process in which teachers andindividual members of staff will have opportunities and the liberty to express their personal opinions and views in any kind of administrative decision making and conflict resolution techniques .
