Abstract

Field trials were conducted to study the bioefficacy of Datura stramonium L. against the deleterious activities of termites, Macrotermes subhyalinus L. (Isoptera: Termitidae). Ethanol, methanol, acetone, petroleum ether, and n-hexane extracts from the whole fruit of D. stramonium were applied to obeche wood (Triplochiton scleroxylon) to serve as a substrate. The extracts were tested at concentrations of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% with four replications each. A standard chemical (Basudin®) and an untreated control were also used. Results showed that the extracts were effective in reducing termite infestation, particularly at the 1.5% concentration, which showed similar efficacy to the Basudin® control.
