Abstract

Large numbers of experts and laypeople alike were misinformed about police violence data, and supportive of objectively damaging social policies, during the George Floyd riots of 2020. Why? In this paper, we review the evidence for misinformed attitudes about policing and the consequences thereof. We end with a discussion of why false beliefs , with devastating consequences, spread so rapidly in society.
