Abstract

Current modes of developing Open Science are not leading to expected outcomes: evidence is growing that, first, in some dimensions they are leading to more inequity and second, their societal impact is unclear or limited. In the face of these insights, I argue that the conceptualisation and promotion of Open Science needs rethinking to serve its goal of serving epistemic justice and societal impact. Instead of focusing on making the products of research digitally accessible, Open Science should focus on the processes of knowledge exchange between researchers and social communities.
