Ahmad Xani (1650-1707), a celebrated Kurdish poet, philosopher, and nationalist, remains a noteworthy figure especially in his contribution to the awareness and cohesiveness of the Kurds as a nation. Xani though a romantic story, Mam and Zin expresses more than just a love; it reveals the concept of a unity of Kurds. Through his works, Xani worked to strengthen the ideas of Kurdish identity, the necessity of the Kurdish language and independence. It was also for the promotion of Kurdish culture and language that he opted for the use of Kurdish instead of the more predominant Arabic or Persian. This research investigates Xani’s legacy as a writer as well as a voice of nationalism calling for the unification of Kurds. Xani, who is still a prominent figure in the narrative of Kurdish nationalism today, will be examined in this paper through the lens of history, literature, and his insights on the Kurdish leadership.
