With the rise of highly engaging large language models (LLMs) also known as chat-bots, comes an ethical paradox. Against the backdrop of a global epidemic of loneliness, For some, AI in this form offers an “emotional rescue.” The promise of connection and emotional support is juxtaposed against the potential of eroding genuine human connection. At a time in which nearly every headline hails the coming of AI, an emotional crisis looms. This paper examines both the promise and perils of AI companionship and explores the ethical and practical dimensions of AI-human bonding. Drawing on philosophical, psychological and ethical perspectives, the paper demonstrates the tension between the immediate satisfaction of social interaction and risk of deepening social isolation. It argues for prioritizing human connection, ethical guidelines, and a hybrid approach when appropriate. This paper ultimately challenges the idea that AI can replace the complexities of human relationships and urges consideration of the ethical dilemmas inherent in artificial friendship and empathy.
