Abstract

We introduce Indus Keyboard, a web-based interactive tool that renders Devanagari text in the Indus script, based on the decipherment proposed by Yajnadevam. This is the first known keyboard to implement such a mapping for the Indus Script, achieved through two custom-designed fonts created using FontForge. The primary font renders Devanagari input as Indus signs based on frequency of occurrence including contextual ligatures (wherever attested), and displays them right-to-left, preserving the original directionality of the script. A secondary Brahmi style font visualizes Brahmi standardized Indus glyphs alongside their corresponding Brahmi text rendered left-to-right, enabling easy comparison and contrast, highlighting the possible evolution of the Indus script to Brahmi over millennia. The keyboard is built entirely using standard web technologies (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) and runs fully in-browser. Indus Keyboard offers a novel tool for researchers, educators, and script enthusiasts interested in early writing systems and their visual interrelationships.
