Abstract

I am currently preparing a ‘Bibliography of the Early Editions of Hugo Grotius’ Mare liberum and De jure belli ac pacis, 1609–1670’. It contains detailed descriptions of more than thirty editions—in Latin, Dutch, and English—of these two famous contributions to international and natural law. In order to give a sample of my work pending its full publication, and to solicit the public’s help on a troublesome problem of descriptive bibliography, I present here a preliminary and abridged draft of my entry on DJB 1631, the folio edition printed in Amsterdam by the famous publisher and cartographer Willem Blaeu.
