Abstract

This study presents the translation and validation of two instruments assessing attitudes toward childfreeness the Czech context – the Attitudes Toward Voluntary Childlessness Scale (AVCS) and the Stereotypes About Childfree Adults Scale (SAChA). Using data from a nonrepresentative sample of 248 Czech respondents aged 18-84, confirmatory and exploratory analyses, correlations and reliability testing were conducted to evaluate the psychometric properties of both scales. The SAChA replicated the unidimensional structure and demonstrated satisfactory reliability and validity. In contrast, the AVCS differed from the original three-factor model, showing a primarily single-factor solution, suggesting cultural variation in how attitudes toward childfreeness are conceptualized. Both scales correlated positively with hostile and benevolent sexism and negatively with interpersonal warmth toward childfree adults, supporting their convergent and discriminant validity. Gender, religiosity, marital status, higher age and income were associated with more negative attitudes. These results offer the first validated Czech-language instruments for studying attitudes toward childfreeness.
