Abstract

This study analyzes the adoption and use of ORCID at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) compared to other researcher profile systems such as Scopus Author ID, ResearcherID, and Google Scholar. Based on a sample of CSIC-affiliated authors who published between 2012 and 2022, the results show a moderate ORCID adoption rate, with gender and job category disparities. Male and permanent researchers were more likely to register and complete their ORCID profiles. Disciplinary differences emerged, with Natural Resources and Social Sciences having the highest number of profiles, while Humanities showed the highest profile completeness. A sharp early increase in ORCID registrations was followed by a gradual decline, though profile updates remained steady. These findings offer insights to improve institutional strategies for persistent identifier use, data quality, and equity in research information systems.
