The Vaidergorn Phenomenon: Dual-Wording in English and Its Unique Suitability for Scientific Discourse

This study proposes that Modern English’s lexical richness, stemming from Anglo-Saxon and French interactions post-Norman Conquest (1066), renders it uniquely suited for scientific discourse. The dual-wording phenomenon, named in honor of the researcher’s family, where Germanic and Romance synonyms coexist with nuanced distinctions, enhances English’s precision. Through historical analysis, a corpus study, and 100 word pairs, this paper illustrates how this lexical duality distinguishes English, complicates translation, and cements its role as theglobal language of science. Implications for scientific communication and future research are discussed.
