Abstract

Undoubtedly, enhancing translation processes and increasing the understanding of Arabic-English political and cultural contexts by illuminating new political metaphor translation procedures are crucial. This study aimed to examine the translation of political metaphors from English to Arabic in political discourse and then to identify the strategies that translators utilize. This study employed deep analysis to achieve the main objective and presented several frequencies. This study revealed the following findings. This study advances translation studies by adding the (H) category to Newmark’s metaphor translation procedures. Although Newmark’s paradigm offers several ways to convey metaphors, this H category is “The equivalent contextual meaning of being true to the original text and communicating the correct contextual meaning of the metaphor”. Additionally, several metaphors in the source language have direct equivalents in Arabic, and Arabic translators have not invented any new versions or techniques in response to these findings. Hence, the study contributed to the translation procedures. Next, the choice of metaphors that are appropriate for use in the target language is affected not only by linguistic and cultural considerations but also by the nature of the text, speakers’ purposes, and the metaphors themselves. Next, this study sheds light on how translators address the language and cultural obstacles that arise while attempting to translate metaphors, offering insights into the translation process. The study also introduces the “H” category, which adds a new dimension to Newmark’s methods. This can help translators explain political meanings more accurately. Accordingly, additional studies should be conducted to provide an in-depth understanding of metaphor translation procedures in political discourse.
