This paper proposes a comprehensive framework for understanding and developing lexical competence in second language learning, with particular focus on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. Drawing from cognitive linguistic principles and pedagogical research, we argue that lexical competence consists of two fundamental components: basic vocabulary competence and extended vocabulary competence. Basic vocabulary competence involves the ability to differentiate and fully utilize core vocabulary items through understanding their semantic cores, while extended vocabulary competence encompasses the breadth of vocabulary across various thematic domains. This framework challenges traditional approaches to vocabulary instruction that emphasize rote memorization and proposes alternative methodologies based on conceptual understanding and meaningful networking of lexical items.
