Abstract

Poverty and gender inequality remain pressing global issues, with women in rural areas often bearing the brunt due to systemic social and economic disparities. This study explores the livelihood strategies and decision-making power of women involved in Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Ashuti I Gram Panchayat of Maheshtala Block, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Anchored in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals—particularly "No Poverty" and "Gender Equality"—the research aims to assess whether SHG participation translates into increased agency and leadership for women. Using qualitative methods, including structured interviews with 46 SHG members and two rounds of Focus Group Discussions, the study evaluates women's role in household and financial decisions. Findings reveal that while women exhibit autonomy in personal and reproductive choices, they remain significantly dependent on male counterparts for financial, asset-related, and political decisions. The proximity to urban Kolkata has not yet translated into significant empowerment, highlighting gaps in training, leadership development, and awareness. The study concludes that targeted sensitisation and capacity-building initiatives are essential to enhance women’s decision-making capabilities and truly harness the potential of SHGs in promoting gender equity.
