Abstract

Sacred groves are culturally protected natural spaces that serve as living archives of environmental history, biodiversity, and ecological rhythms. They function as 'Ecological Timekeepers' by preserving ecological memory, including biodiversity, climate indicators, and ancient environmental patterns across generations. This paper explores how these traditional practices contribute significantly to biodiversity conservation and why they can be aptly termed 'timekeepers,' drawing on specific examples from India and global contexts. Furthermore, it discusses the relevance of this traditional ecological knowledge system in addressing contemporary challenges and reviving planetary health through localized climate adaptation, biodiversity restoration, sustainable resource management, and fostering a holistic environmental ethic.
