Abstract

Galileo Galilei is often said to be the father of modern science. Scholars agree on his scientific contributions, e.g., the inclined plane experiment, kinematical laws, etc., and on the importance of the new scientific method he introduced but disagree about the philosophical underpinnings of that method. I discuss these issues historically and characterize the use of the ancient method of analysis that he employed. This led to his experimental method of analysis, a kind of experimental empiricism incorporating elements of rationalism and empiricism.
