Abstract

While most personality research has focused on top-down approaches to assessment and analysis which aims to reduce the dimensionality of data, recent developments led to calls for the development of bottom-up taxonomies of traits that assess the personality space more comprehensively. In this manuscript, we describe such an attempt based largely on recommendations from Condon et al. (2021), who laid out a series of pragmatic steps for conducting bottom-up personality assessment. Ultimately, our efforts resulted in the 198-item 100 Nuances of Personality (100NP), an item pool that measures personality traits with a balance of comprehensiveness, effectiveness, and efficiency. Here, we describe the process by which the 100NP was developed, as well as some of its current uses and possibilities for future applications.
